NABGC ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025

Sunday 1st June 2025

On Sunday 1st June over 100 young people gathered to take part in the NABGC National Athletics Championships hosted by Durham Association of Boys & Girls Clubs.

The event took place at Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure & Sports Centre, in Shildon, County Durham.

Despite the weather forecast, the weather stayed predominantly fine, with just one or two spells of rain. Which meant that the event, by and large, went to plan and stayed on track.

There was a full range of track and field events taking place including 100 and 200 metres, 4×100 relay, 800 and 1,500 metres and even a 3,000 metre event. In addition, there was long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin events all at under 11, 13, 15 and 17 age ranges. And all were incredibly well competed.

No wonder a number of our most well-known athletes have taken part in this event including Kate Waugh and Richard Kilty who both competed in the Olympics in Paris last year as this is such a well organised and valued event in the athletics calendar.

A vast number of young people went home clutching medals including from Essex Boys & Girls who had stayed at nearby Grindon Youth Club the night before – the clutch of medals made the long drive home much easier.

George Sokhi of Essex Boys & Girls Clubs said, “This has been a great event, and the young people have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They loved staying over at Grindon Youth Club last night and they have taken part in a really well run event today. There are all sorts of abilities taking part and everyone has been made to feel welcome, encouraged and have achieved something.”

Andy Hamill, National Director of National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs commented, “This has been a wonderful day and event providing opportunity for young athletes to progress as well as allowing young people to have their first go at a range of athletic events. None of this would have been possible but for the army of volunteers who have supported the day in so many different ways.”
